On Writing

A few days ago, I asked a question via Twitter soliciting topics to blog about. Someone suggested that I write about why I need to write.

After recently writing another contracted piece for the AWS Python Development Center, the itch to write more returned. I started reading Jack Hart’s “A Writer’s Coach” which is phenomenal both in Hart’s writing as well as his pragmatic advice. It has me yearning to really craft my writing — it’s quite obvious that it needs improvement!

Since I was in middle school writing has been my most natural form of self- expression. When it comes to a tough or complex topic, I prefer emails to phone calls, letters to face-to-face, or an article to public speaking. With spoken words there isn’t a delete key. I can’t edit the words as they exit my mouth, once they are out they are out. I have a lot of respect for those that seem to relish in delivering talks. It terrifies me.

But writing is different. It is safe. And yet, it still provides a much needed outlet to talk about things that I want to talk about. It also helps to keep chaotic thought and ideas organized. It elevates me out of the weeds of the day to day and gives me focus.
